Former Boston Globe reporter Alison O’Leary returned to Fuller Village recently to speak about the book “So Close to Home: A True Story of an American Family’s Fight for Survival During World War II” that she co-wrote with frequent collaborator Michael Tougias. It tells the story of the Downs family’s struggle for survival after a German submarine blew their boat out of the water in the Gulf of Mexico in 1942, while also giving the perspective of the U-boat sailors. O’Leary discussed the germination of the book, the research behind it, as well as many of its details. This talk is currently airing during the Monday Forum at 8 p.m. on the Public channel (Comcast 9/RCN 13).
