It’s a busy time of year in Milton, with Town Election, Town Meeting, MHS Graduation and lots of other events trying to squeeze onto the schedule before people take off for summer vacation.

Luckily, we’ve got Milton covered, with live broadcasts of those major events, and recordings of lots of other concerts, ceremonies and Milton-specific entertainment and education. We love being a vibrant part of this incredible community, and helping you catch up with the things you weren’t able to get to in-person. 

So get out there and enjoy the nice weather, and if you see an MATV camera, wave and say hello!

Announcements

The MATV studio will be closed on Monday, May 27,
in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.

FCC Funding Threat Conitnues

The FCC could still decide at any moment to vote on it’s proposed rule change that could decimate public access TV funding, but support for the effort to get them to stop continues to grow, with more elected representatives at all levels of government signing on, and more citizens making their voices heard.

Milton Scene founder and Broad Appeal host Melissa Fassel Dunn recently sat down with Milton Access Television Executive Director Michael Lynch to find out, in simple terms, what exactly all of this means.
Take a look at the interview below, and then put your name on the petition to keep the cable companies from charging local municipalities for access to the airwaves.

Annual Town Meeting
LIVE Broadcast

The 2019 Milton Annual Town Meeting begins on 
Monday, May 6th, at the MHS Auditorium, at 7:30pm.  

MATV will broadcast Town Meeting LIVE 
on the Government channel (Comcast 8/RCN 3).

MATV will broadcast each additional night of Town Meeting,
same time and same channel, until its completion.

The broadcast can also be viewed live online
via Video OnDemand at the following URL:

Recordings of the live broadcasts will be uploaded to our
Video OnDemand website as quickly as they are able to be processed.

Milton High Graduation
LIVE Coverage

The Milton High School Class of 2019 will graduate on Sunday, June 2.

MATV will broadcast the 2019 Commencement Exercises LIVE from the Copeland Field House beginning at 2pm on Sunday, June 2, on town-wide cable on the Education channel (Comcast 22/RCN 15).

A live stream of the event will also be available via the MATV Video OnDemand website at the following URL: http://milton.vod.castus.tv/vod/?live=ch3&nav=live

Upcoming Class Schedule

Orientation

Want to know how to get started at MATV?
Come learn about all the different opportunities MATV has to offer.
This class is a prerequisite for all MATV classes.

Upcoming Orientation Dates:
Wednesday, May 15th, 6pm – 7pm

Studio Production

Learn about our Newtek Tricaster HD switcher and its functions and features. You will also learn about our studio cameras, teleprompter, lighting, and the basics of our Yamaha sound board.

The next Studio Production Class
will take place on May 22.

This class is limited to 6 people. Participants must have taken an orientation class. 

This class is open to ages 15+.

Post Production

Learn the basics of Adobe Premiere, including how to open and save projects, use transitions and effects, mix audio, and create basic graphics. Participants will also learn to cut clips together and learn some editing terminology.

The next Post Production Class will take place in July. Stay Tuned for dates.

This class is limited to 6 people. Participants must have taken an orientation class. 

This class is open to ages 15+.

Field Production

This workshop will focus on the Canon XA20, learning how to properly set up a tripod and mount the camera, and different audio recording options. Upon completion of this class, you will be able to check out field equipment and volunteer to help cover events!

The next Field Production Class will be in June. Stay tuned for dates.

This class is limited to 8 people. Participants must have taken an orientation class. 

This class is open to ages 15+.

Dealing with inconsolable grief; finding the joy in the moment during seemingly hopeless times; and ultimately triumphing through tragedy: these are among the themes of a new episode of “Talk of the Town,” where host Brian Kelley speaks to Kari McHugh about her late son, Michael, his fight against cancer, and the ways in which they have been able to transcend his loss through community and perseverance. There’s a whole lot of hype out there about “Avenger’s: Endgame” and the return of “Game of Thrones,” but there’s also a whole lot else to watch when you’re done with those. Eileen Maher is back with another episode of “Reel Talk” to help you navigate those waters, with cinema reviews of “Dumbo,” “Us,” “Gloria Bell” and “The Chaperone,” plus Netflix show “Santa Clarita Diet.” Check it out when it airs Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at 8 p.m. on the Public channel.

Warm weather means lounging under a tree with a good book, and lots of engaging events at the Milton Public Library. Some truly unique programs are scheduled for May, including a Children’s Room garden party where kids can plant pizza ingredients, as well as Art Week in the adult events. Tune in for this and more when “The Page Turner” library update airs Monday and Wednesday mornings at 7 a.m. as well as Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m., all on the Public channel.

Resident Bill Lane worked for 35 years for the classic East Coast restaurant and ice cream chain Friendly’s, starting as a trainee and eventually retiring as Vice President of Operations, Training, Franchising and Administration. He recently spoke at Fuller Village about the history of the franchise, sharing stories and photos that are sure to provoke happy memories for anyone who grew up frequenting their tables. This lecture is currently airing during the Monday forum at 6:30 p.m. on the Public channel.

Heart healthy recipes are on the plate on a new “Meet Me in the Kitchen.” Massachusetts General Hospital’s Dr. Monique Tello joins Connie Spiros to cook up some grilled chicken stir-fry with a tangy, mustardy sauce, a veggie and nut-filled salad, some edamame for a snack, and dark chocolate-covered strawberries for dessert. Turn this on and cook along in your kitchen when it airs on the Public channel  (Comcast 9/RCN 13) on Tuesday mornings at 11 a.m. and all weekend long at 7 p.m.

Teaching children about Boston’s history is retired National Park Ranger Lauren McGrath’s passion, and she recently stopped by the set of “It’s All Write with Suzette” to talk about her recently released illustrated book on the subject, “If Boston’s Buildings Could Speak: By Freddie the Fish.” She chats with host Suzette Martinez Standring about her career leading tours of Boston’s historic downtown, as well as how this book came to be. This conversation is currently airing on the Public channel Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 8:30 p.m.

In celebration of National Poetry Month, three poets who are also professors at Salem State University recently held a shared reading at the Milton Public Library. Professors Kevin Carey, January Gill O’Neil and J.D. Scrimgeour read from their original poems in a so-called poetry in the round fashion, following each other rapid fire, choosing poems on the fly to follow thematically what had just been read before, one at a time. Tune in for this lively reading when it airs during the Monday Forum at 5 p.m. on the Public channel.

There may not be any contested town-wide office races this Town Election, but voters will be faced with a referendum as to whether to make the Town Treasurer job an appointed position, as opposed to the elected role it is now. Town Government Study Committee Chair Rick Neely dropped by the set of “My Town Matters” this month to take an in-depth look at this issue. And “Fuller Talks” is taking on the Town Treasurer question as well, as Town Government Study Committee member Leroy Walker, along with Fuller Village Chair Marvin Gordon, makes his pitch to voters. The panelists also get in some history on this episode that is all about how Fuller Village came to be. This discussion is currently airing at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well as Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m., all on the Public channel.

The Apollo Club of Boston, the second-oldest continuously active men’s singing group in the country, recently held a concert at Fuller Village, performing folk songs, show tunes, sea chanteys, love songs and other classical and semi-classical music. This lively and pedigreed production is currently airing during Music Thursday at 7 p.m. on the Public channel.

Milton High School and Pierce Middle School musicians recently teamed up for Jazz Night at the MHS auditorium. Groups of all sizes and compositions took the stage to show off their skills and entertain the crowd on this evening that was full of familiar favorites as well as innovative improvisation. Tune in to the Education channel (Comcast 22/RCN15) at 2:30 p.m. on weekdays or 9 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to catch this performance.

Melissa Fassel Dunn, owner and founder of The Milton Scene, recently sat down with MATV Executive Director Michael Lynch to discuss the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) proposed rulemaking that, if approved, could significantly reduce the amount of funding MATV and other local access stations across the country receive from cable providers. Tune in to hear how funding was started, what the proposed rule sets out to establish, and what you as residents can do to help. This interview is currently airing Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. on the Public channel (Comcast 9/RCN 13), as well as elsewhere around the MATV channels.

Quincy Choral Society’s recent celebration of Irish music and verse, “A Celtic Tradition,” was a concert featuring an array of arrangements, tunes and tones. The full-blown chorus, featuring many Milton residents, took center stage for much of the evening, with variety provided by small groups from solos to quintets, various vocals with accompaniments, poetry, bagpipes and audience participation. This program is currently airing during Music Thursday on the Public channel at 5 p.m.

The Milton Public School’s student choruses were also in action, closing out Music in Our Schools Month with a pair of concerts showcasing a variety of groups. Both of these performances are currently airing on the Education channel (Comcast 22/RCN 15), with the Grades 6 through 12 concert at 4 p.m. and the Grades 7 through 12 concert at 5 p.m.

The MBTA recently held a public hearing at the Council on Aging to share details of the department’s plans for the Mattapan High Speed Line trolley car that run through town, as well as to field questions from the public. Mounting costs and difficulty of repair have put pressure on maintaining this historical railway, and this information-filled meeting is an excellent way to get all of the facts. It is currently airing daily on the Government channel (Comcast 8/RCN 3) at 9:30 a.m.

“Organ Donation: The Impact One Decision Can Make” was a recent presentation given at Pierce Middle School that featured local residents whose lives have been saved by organ donations, or whose loved ones were able to help save others by donating their own organs. Also hear from a leading surgeon in this area about the state of the art, as well as en expert sharing enlightening information and statistics. This program is currently airing on the Education channel at noon Monday through Thursday, and at 10:30 a.m. Friday through Sunday.

Gigi Giraffe is back in action with her pal Mel on a new Easter-themed episode of “Actin’ Up.” This might just be the silliest episode yet, with imaginations running wild during Silly Story Time, hilarious jokes in Mail Time, and a trip across the Atlantic Ocean too. Join in the fun seven days a week at 3:30 p.m., and Monday through Thursday at 7:30 a.m., all on the Public channel.

Making its worldwide debut this is MATV’s newest show, “A Nurse’s Knowledge, with Eileen,” a short five-to-ten-minute program that features important health information from a host (someone whom many MATV viewers will recognize) who has been a nurse for over 20 years. Each month, Nurse Eileen shares her expertise on a timely and vital area of medical and health knowledge. April is Diabetic Foot Care Health Month, and the host goes over the most important things to keep you or your loved ones’ steppers in good working order. “The Southie Pact” author Kevin Devlin recently sat down to talk about his debut novel with Suzette as well. A longtime newspaper writer in South Boston, Devlin decided to branch out to the fiction genre to tell a story about a group of friends that is both tragic and funny, dealing with the opioid epidemic. He talks about his book and the process of writing it in this new episode that is airing on Video OnDemand.

John Allen of First Congregational Church in Milton has a long history of humanitarian activism when it comes to immigration, and at a recent lecture at Fuller Village, he shared the story of how he came to be involved in this effort, as well as giving important factual information about this misunderstood and hot-button political area, including how the church is helping those who are caught in the middle.
