This holiday season, we are taking time to appreciate what we have, and those who are special to us.

The Milton Access TV studio will be closed for the Christmas Holiday on December 24 and 25, as well as for the New Year’s Holiday on December 31 and January 1.

Larry Spotted Crow Mann recently stopped by the Milton Public Library to share his Native American Songs, Stories and Drumming presentation with an all-ages audience. Full of history, myth, fun, drumming, singing and audience participation, this musical talk was both informative and entertaining. Tune in for this program when is airs during Music Thursdays at 5 p.m. on the Public channel (Comcast 9/RCN 13).
Curry College’s Professor Emeritus John Hill continued his lecture “Contemporary Issues in Historical Perspective” series at Fuller Village with a look at World War I and the lessons to be learned from examining both the successful and problematic decisions made by major actors throughout the conflict. A particular focus on the moves made by then-U.S. President Woodrow Wilson runs through this talk, that is currently airing during the Monday Forum at 5 p.m. on the Public channel.
Sam Ducharme had no prior backpacking experience when he bought a plane ticket to Georgia and set out on the Appalachian Trail, hiking 2,180 miles through 14 states, sleeping in a hammock for six months and encountering all the challenges and beauty along the way to the trail terminus at Mount Katahdin in Maine. He shared his journey with an audience at the Milton Public Library recently, and MATV was there to capture this photo-filled talk, which is currently airing during the Monday Forum at 6:30 p.m. on the Public channel.
Hats, hats and more hats were on stage and under examination at a recent lecture at the Eustis Estate that took a surprising and entertaining look at the history and cultural significance of headwear throughout the centuries. Prolific hat collector Lorraine Muratore-Pires, who owns over 500 historical pieces, reminds everyone that every hat has a story, in this fun talk that is airing at 8 p.m. during the Monday Forum on the Public channel.
Changes are happening at the Milton Public Library, including new spaces and services. Maddy Hoy was the featured performer at this month’s MAC Open Mic, bringing her original songwriting, singing and ukulele strumming back from college to the stage where she started performing, this time for a full set. The “uke” seemed to be an unofficial theme for the night, as fresh faces and monthly regulars alike also played tunes on the tiny but powerful instrument. Tune in to the Public channel (Comcast 9/RCN 13) during Music Thursday at 8 p.m. for this performance.
This time around, Jeff Stoodt’s “Great American Songbook” takes a look and a listen to Jerome Kern, the pioneering composer of the groundbreaking 1927 musical “Show Boat,” among many other seminal American works of the mid-20th Century. Soprano Jennifer Sgroe and pianist Tim Steele join the host to help showcase this exploration of one of the country’s all-time greatest songwriters. This program is currently airing at 5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as well as 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, all on the Public channel.
The town’s annual Veterans Day Observance was held on Sunday, Nov. 11, in front of Town Hall, and this year’s ceremony commemorated the 100-year anniversary of Armistice Day, which brought an end to World War I on Nov. 11, 1918. Marine Corps Maj. Michael Devin, a Milton native, was the featured speaker. A recording of this event is currently airing daily on the Government channel (Comcast 8/RCN 3) at both 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
As part of its “On the Wing” exhibit featuring bird art from Mass Audubon, the Eustis Estate recently hosted Amy Montague, director of the Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon, for an illustrated talk that looks at the connections between high society Boston, the arts, and the early days of the conservation movement, including an intriguing connection to the Eustis family. This lecture is currently airing during the Monday Forum at 8 p.m. on the Public channel.
Resident Pat Hines served in Nepal with the U.S. Peace Corps from 1971 to 1973, and on this month’s episode of “A Fuller Life,” she sits down with host Blossom Glassman for an interview about her experiences there. Photos from the trip are shown in this broadcast, that also includes stories about the culture of Nepal at the time, as well as personal experiences. Tune in when this show airs Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m., as well as Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m., all on the Public channel (Comcast 9/RCN 13).
Popular author of the Dermot Sparhawk crime novels and friend of the show of “It’s All Write with Suzette,” Tom MacDonald stopped by the studio to talk about his brand new book in the series, “Murder in the Charlestown Bricks.” This successful Boston-based author shares some key insights about his writing process that will be interesting to fans as well as aspiring writers. Switch over to the Public channel Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 8:30 p.m. to catch this conversation.
Mark Hopkins recently visited Fuller Village to share the story of his 2004 trip to a South African nature reserve to participate in a conservation effort to count the herbivores in the park. This photo-filled lecture features stories the bush, including some perilous moments, as well as discussion of how this counting technique helps preserve the ecosystem in Africa’s oldest proclaimed nature reserve, the Hluhluwe–iMfolozi. This talk is currently airing during the Monday Forum at 5 p.m. on the Public channel.
“What Happens When You Come to the Emergency Room” is the title of a recent talk at Fuller Village, where Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton’s Director of Patient Experience Maureen Burns-Johnson stopped by to talk about what to expect, as well as share helpful tips about how to prepare for a visit, and what to do during and after. This informative presentation is currently being broadcast on the Public channel at 6:30 p.m. during the Monday Forum.
Upton Bell, former general manager of the New England Patriots and a longtime sports media figure, was the featured speaker at the recent Milton Library Foundation Literary Gala. He addressed his upbringing in the world of professional football, as well as recounted insider stories from along the way. Also tune in for some very colorful appearances from well-known Miltonians as the broadcast of this event airs on Tuesday evenings at 8:30 p.m. on the Public channel (Comcast 9/RCN 13).
Curry College professor Dr. Grant Burrier is back with a timely new lecture titled “The Perils of Populism: Lessons from Latin America.” With 20th Century Latin America as the backdrop, this talk begins with a look at the origins of populism that arise as a response to oppression, and then moves on to how the momentum of the movement can carry it past service to the populace and become a tool for its own form of disenfranchisement. This talk is currently airing during the Monday Forum at 8 p.m. on the Public channel.
Lauren Barone is the owner of The Seasoned Palette, a full-service catering company, but before delving into the culinary world had a successful career in medical research, including running a hematology oncology laboratory. She is the guest on this month’s episode of “Broad Appeal,” as she sits down to talk all about her professional journey and the challenges she had to overcome along the way, and shares some expert cooking tips.
