Report from National Conference
The Alliance for Community Media recently held its annual Conference in Baltimore July 11 – 13.
The Alliance for Community media is a national organization that advocates for Public, Education, and Government (PEG) access centers to promote free speech, civic engagement, and to create community dialog through local media. About 3,000 PEG centers across the country are members of the ACM.
The theme this year was “Be More.” As we venture into the future, community media centers look at the challenges they face, and what opportunities lie ahead.
MATV’s own executive Director Michael Lynch attended the conference, where he attended workshops relating to fundraising, federal and state policies that affect community media, and creating youth programs.
A highlight of the conference was the keynote speaker, Amy Goodman of “Democracy Now!” who spoke about the importance of community media stations, the work they do, and the meaning of independent and local media in 2018 and beyond.

Want to know how to get started at MATV?
Come learn about all the different opportunities MATV has to offer.
This class is a prerequisite for all MATV classes.

Post Production
Learn the basics of Adobe Premiere, including how to open and save projects, use transitions and effects, mix audio, and create basic graphics. Participants will also learn to cut clips together and learn some editing terminology.
Thursday, August 23rd, 6-7pm.
This class is limited to 6 people. Participants must have taken an orientation class.
This class is open to ages 15+.
Field Production
This workshop will focus on the Canon XA20, learning how to properly set up a tripod and mount the camera, and different audio recording options. Upon completion of this class, you will be able to check out field equipment and volunteer to help cover events!
Thursday, September 27th, 6-7pm.
This class is limited to 8 people. Participants must have taken an orientation class.
This class is open to ages 15+.

Our weekly local sports show, “Steppin’ Up to the Plate,” took a look at what Milton’s athletes are up to over the summer, stopping by the Wildcat Wellness Center at MHS to talk with the head of the high school’s strength and conditioning program, Ted Kackley, who runs the program. Join host Mike Vega while he goes inside the state-of-the-art weight room and training techniques that young athletes are using to reach their potential as this new installment premieres Thursday, Aug. 2, at 6:30 p.m. and then plays Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 5:30 p.m., all on the Education channel (Comcast 22/RCN 15). Also catch reruns weeknights at 6:30 p.m.

Dr. Andrew Budson is one of the top scholars and clinicians in the world in the field of human memory, including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. In a recent lecture he gave at Fuller Village, he discussed his new book, “Seven Steps to Managing Your Memory,” sharing practical tips for recognizing what are normal changes to memory and what are causes for concern, strategies for dealing with memory impairment, as well as promising new research into treatments for Alzheimer’s. Tune in to hear from this world-class expert on neurology and memory care as this talk airs during the Monday Forum at 5 p.m. on the Public channel (Comcast 9/RCN 13).
Get tips on how to craft your own early-20th Century vintage style, as well as learn about the fashion of Ancient Egypt, in a new lecture from art historian and Egyptologist Dr. Colleen Manassa Darnell, who teaches at the University of Hartford and wears vintage, mostly from the 1920s, nearly every day. This talk is part of the Eustis Estate’s ongoing special exhibition, “Head to Toe: Hat and Shoe Fashions from Historic New England,” and it is currently airing during the Monday Forum at 8 p.m. on the Public channel.
Connie Spiros, along with a neighborhood pal, kicks up some classic favorites on a new episode of “Meet Me in the Kitchen.” Chocolate-chip “blondie” brownies, a Waldorf salad, and some not-your-everyday mac and cheese are all on the menu. Learn the important concepts and tricks to make your own versions of these dishes sing, as this program airs on the public channel Tuesday mornings at 11 a.m. and all weekend long at 7 p.m.
Ukuleles, guitars, drum sets, keyboards, vocals, harmony — it’s all part of the July edition of the Milton Art Center Open Mic. Solo acts, duets and full bands play everything from folk to rock, and most of them are faces you’ll probably recognize. The Open Mic is currently airing on Music Thursdays at 8 p.m. on the Public channel.
Kids can get silly while learning all about drums and other percussion musical instruments in a new installment of the Library Children’s Hour featuring Mystic Drumz. Kooky characters, dance- and sing-a-longs, and a license to have fun are all part of this interactive performance featuring djembes, talking drums, cymbals, a musical frog and more. Tune in as it airs at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays on the Public channel.
“Talk of the Town” is all about consumer protection with this month’s guest, chief of staff and general counsel of the state’s Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation, Greg White. Host Brian Kelley conducts a wide-ranging interview about the office’s services, including their regulation on contractors, banks and other businesses, as well as what to do in situations that feel like scams or fraud. The annual Milton Music Fest and Fireworks was “A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock ’n Roll” this year, and the entire concert was captured by MATV cameras. Musical acts the Neville Sisters, Doc Ellis Band, Co-Pilot, and headliner Country Mile held down the stage at Hutchinson’s Field, with spectacular fireworks to cap the evening off. The day after the Music Fest, Milton Hill turned green for the annual Celtic Sunday festivities with an entire afternoon of Irish music and fun. The lineup included Anto Crossey, Sean O’Toole, Colm O’Brien, Erin’s Melody, The Fenian Sons, Curragh’s Fancy, Devri, Pauline Wells, The Young Wolfetones and Cherry Orchard. Tune in for the entire show when it airs on the Education channel at 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
In this month’s episode of “The Great American Songbook,” host Jeff Stoodt takes a look at the work and life of Stephen Sondheim. Most highly appreciated for his lyrics written for some of the most famous musicals of the 20th Century, including “West Side Story,” Sondheim has been writing prolifically since 1954. Vocalists studying at university join Jeff in presenting many of these familiar tunes as this program airs at 5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as well as 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, all on the Public channel.
Fletcher Steele’s secret garden up off of Highland Street is the focus of this month’s “Milton Garden Path.” A walled oasis now a standalone property owned by the Milton Garden Club, this hidden gem is a mystery to most Miltonians. Host Christine Paxhia reveals this secluded sanctuary in this new episode that is currently airing on the Public channel (Comcast 9/RCN 13) Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m.
Selectman Melinda Collins was the second of the three newly-elected Selectman to sit down with “My Town Matters” host Frank Schroth for an inaugural interview. Talk focused on the future, with an eye to the processes that will drive big decisions like development, affordable housing and various major municipal projects. It’s currently airing Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7:30 p.m. on the Public channel.
The giraffe is on the beach! Gigi Giraffe and the kid crew are catching some rays and taking a dip in the ocean on a summer-themed episode of “Actin’ Up!” Learn how to make a seaside collage during craft time, and take a trip to Brazil to learn some Portuguese in this warm-weather half-hour. Join in with Mel, Gigi and her entourage when this program airs seven days a week at 3:30 p.m., and Monday through Thursday at 7:30 a.m., all on the Public channel.
Patricia Gervasi opened her own salon on Beale Street in Quincy in 2015 after a journey up through the beauty industry that began as a teenager. On a new episode of “Broad Appeal,” this resident and entrepreneur talks about setting out on her own, including all the challenges involved in setting up her business. Pick up business tips and inspiration as this program airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. and Thursdays at 9 a.m. on the Public channel.
The Sharon Community Chorus recently brought its nautically-themed “Overboard” pops performance to Fuller Village. Songs of wayfaring sailors, tropical islands and the simple cleansing power of water are selected from American Standards as well as some more contemporary songbooks. This concert is currently airing during Music Thursday at 7 p.m. on the Public channel.
