MATV Candidates Night Debate

The 2019 MATV Candidates Night will take place on 
Tuesday, March 26th, at the Council on Aging, beginning at 7pm.  

MATV will broadcast the event LIVE 
on the Government channel (Comcast 8/RCN 3).

All candidates for Townwide Election office are invited to participate.
(This does not include candidates for Town Meeting Member.)

Participants should come prepared with a two-minute statement. Questions will be asked of the candidates by members of the Milton High Debate Team, the Milton Times and the Milton Scene.

Save Public Access TV!

Sign the Petition to Congress to Stop the FCC!

For those of you who have been following, PEG center (Milton Access TV!) funding is under threat. The FCC is proposing to redefine what a franchise fee is – and it will radically reduce the level of monetary support available to run PEG access channels across the United States, including us here at Milton Access TV. PEG access channels provide government coverage that allows transparency so citizens can monitor local government actions – something vital to the health of local democracy. PEG access channels also provide local content in communities produced by local residents. PEG channels are vital to a community, and if the FCC is successful in their rule making, PEG stations may no longer be in existence. 
Congress should stop the FCC from trying to re-write the 1984 Cable Act to financially starve local communities and our PEG channels in its rule-making (Docket NR 05-311).

Upcoming Class Schedule

Orientation

Want to know how to get started at MATV?
Come learn about all the different opportunities MATV has to offer.
This class is a prerequisite for all MATV classes.

Upcoming Orientation Dates:
Wednesday, March 20th, 6pm – 7pm

Post Production

Learn the basics of Adobe Premiere, including how to open and save projects, use transitions and effects, mix audio, and create basic graphics. Participants will also learn to cut clips together and learn some editing terminology.

The next Studio Production Class will take place
on Thursday, March 28th, 6pm – 7pm

This class is limited to 6 people. Participants must have taken an orientation class. 

This class is open to ages 15+.

Studio Production

Learn about our Newtek Tricaster HD switcher and its functions and features. You will also learn about our studio cameras, teleprompter, lighting, and the basics of our Yamaha sound board.

The next Studio Production Class will be in April. Stay tuned for dates.

This class is limited to 6 people. Participants must have taken an orientation class. 

This class is open to ages 15+.

Field Production

This workshop will focus on the Canon XA20, learning how to properly set up a tripod and mount the camera, and different audio recording options. Upon completion of this class, you will be able to check out field equipment and volunteer to help cover events!

The next Field Production Class will be in May. Stay tuned for dates.

This class is limited to 8 people. Participants must have taken an orientation class. 

This class is open to ages 15+.

The John Kordalewski Jazz Quintet recently performed at the public library, offering “A Celebration of African American Composers” that featured a sampling of musicians who made their mark as both composers and improvisers, including Thelonious Monk, Tadd Dameron, Cedar Watson, Makanda Ken McIntyre, Bill Barron and John Stubblefield. by. Piano, trombone, tenor saxophone, bass and drums filled the Keys Room for this program that is currently airing during Music Thursday at 6:30 p.m. on the Public channel.

“Underage Drinking Prevention: Practical Parenting Facts and Tips for ‘The Talk’ and Much More” was the title of a talk recently delivered by Tufts University School of Medicine Professor Margie Skeer at a meeting of the Milton Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition. Parents will learn about a number of common misconceptions regarding underage drinking and talking to their children about alcohol use, as well as many other useful tips and pieces of information. This program is currently airing seven days a week at 5 p.m. on the Education channel.

A new installment of “The Great American Songbook” takes a look back at a seminal year in music: 1968. Host Jeff Stoodt recalls some of his favorites from that heady time, while he is joined in the studio by local band Lower Falls, comprising Geoff Shaw, Kevin Dambruch, Adam Winkler and Gary Gardiner, along with musicians Franc Graham, Claudia Wellington, Dan Deleo, Jeremy Blanchard and Steve Cousineau. This program is currently airing at 5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as well as 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings, all on the Public channel.

Musician and storyteller Eshu Bumpus brought his magical tales to the library recently, weaving a variety of African, African-American and world folktales with music, humor and mystery. Hear a new take on the Tortoise and the Hare, find out how the cat learned to purr and join in some sing-and-dance-alongs when this program airs during the Library Children’s Hour every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. on the Public channel.

It’s a “Hamilton” takeover at the Milton Public Library this month, as Milton Reads events fill up the schedule. In the March library update, you can learn the details of these programs inspired by the book that accompanies Lin Manuel Miranda’s smash hit musical, as well as get the the lowdown on everything else going on at the library. The “Page Turner” is currently airing Monday and Wednesday mornings at 7 a.m. as well as Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m., all on the Public channel.

The February Special Town Meeting was previewed with an article-by-article overview discussion between Town Moderator Bob Hiss and Warrant Committee Chair George Ashur. The two town leaders stopped by the MATV studio to go over the warrant and put into plain English the items that were up for a vote this February 25.  Even though Town Meeting has passed, it’s still a good overview of the issues considered and voted at that Town Meeting.

The Academy Awards are Feb. 24, but Oscar Night is already here on “Reel Talk with Eileen Maher.” Will “The Favourite” upset “Roma” for Best Picture, or will a dark horse take the prize? What are the politics at play that might determine many of the categories? Hear some interesting angles you may not have thought of from the town’s film buffs, including guest host Matt Bernstein, when this Oscar preview episode airs Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights at 8 p.m. on the Public channel. (And Eileen will soon be back with her Oscars wrap-up show, which should be airing in the same time slot starting Friday, March 8. You’ll still be able to watch the Oscars preview episode OnDemand.)

The kids are at it again, with the completely student-run Milton High School Cabaret Part II. Jazz ensembles, solo performances, sketches, poetry, duets, trios, quartets and more are all part of this fun, light-hearted concert that is hosted and performed by the talented young artists of MHS. Baby Boomers facing retirement and the important decision of when, if ever, to sell their home will find important and practical insight on the new episode of “It’s All Write with Suzette.” Author and financial planner Penelope Tzougros sits down in the MATV studio to talk about her book, “Your Home Sweet Home: How to Decide Whether You Should Stay or Move in Retirement,” and her process for evaluating if it’s a smart move for retirees to stay in their homes, looking at the question from physical, financial and social perspectives, as well as strategies to make staying put a possibility. This program is currently airing on the Public channel Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 8:30 p.m.

Jazz legend Sheila Jordan rose to fame in the mid-20th Century putting lyrics to the music of  Charlie Parker, while also pioneering a unique vocal style, gathering commendations from some of the most important names in the genre. In Boston for a recent performance, she stopped by the MATV studio to speak to Jeff Stoodt on the set of “You’ve Got To Have Art,” reflecting on her career, influences and some of the finer points of how she approaches her craft and teaching her students. Boston Globe film critics Ty Burr and Janice Page return to the Milton Public Library for their annual dissection of the Academy Awards, “Handicapping the Oscars.” These two movie experts give their predictions on who will win and why, along with their takes on who got snubbed, industry subterfuge and all kinds of other insider information. Professional photographer Ellen Rogers has been serious about taking photos since high school. As the latest guest on “Broad Appeal,” she shared the winding journey of her career in the medium, from finding the best college to pursue her passion, to pie-in-the-sky post-college years, agency work, covering weddings, working as a location and talent scout for films, to founding her own company, Ellen Rogers Photography, while raising a family. Anyone who has ever picked up a camera will enjoy this conversation that is currently airing Tuesdays at 8 p.m. and Thursdays at 9 a.m. on the Public channel.

A chamber trio from the Brockton Symphony Orchestra recently visited Fuller Village to perform “A Taste of Symphony.” This intimate, hour-long program features original compositions as well as some well-known works with regional roots played on piano, flute and clarinet. Fresh off their finalist nomination for Best Youth Program at the Mass Creator Awards, Mel and Gigi are back for 2019 with a sports-themed show, in honor of the Super Bowl and the Patriots’ appearance in the big game. The kid crew chats up Gigi after they get some exercise for their imaginations, and when she hangs out with Mel, everyone’s favorite naughty giraffe takes the idea of a “bowl” a little too literally. This episode is currently airing seven days a week at 3:30 p.m., and Monday through Thursday at 7:30 a.m., all on the Public channel.

“The Intersectionality of Culture and Health Care” was the topic of a lecture recently delivered at BIDMC Hospital-Milton by Massachusetts General Hospital oncological Nurse Practitioner Leah Gordon. In her talk, the presenter, who has a doctorate in nursing education, examined health care through the lens of cultural competence, exploring the ways in which providers can be sensitive to patients’ diverse backgrounds in order to provide the best care. This talk, which is relevant to a wide variety of professions and interests, is currently airing during the Monday Forum on the Public channel at 6:30 p.m.
